A Wanganui resident who was motoring in Taranaki recently witnessed the unusual spectacle of a school in flames. “Although one should not be mirthful on such occasions I could not help laughing at the delighted antics of the children, especially the boys,” he said. “They' made no attempt to restrain their glee, laughing and dancing as the old wooden building collapsed.” The local resident said it reminded him of his own school days, but his dream that the school would be destroyed by fire never came true.
Instructions have been issued from the head office of the Bank of New Zealand that all ledgers dating over 25 years back are to be destroyed. The task is a bigger one than appears at first sight. In the New Plymouth office, for instance, between 70 and 80 ledgers, weighing several tons, are involved. The pages have to be taken out of the ledgers, so many at a. time, and thrust on the fire.
