BIG BILLIARDS

LINDRUM’S GREAT FORM NEW ZEALAND RECORD BREAK Those who attended the billiards match between Lindrum and McConaeliy at the Midland Billiards Saloon, 82 Manners Street, yesterday had the good fortune to see the young Australian put up a four-figure break while on the top of his form. Play commenced in Hie afternoon with the score—Lindrum 1500. McConaeliy 830 — Lindrum being in play with 3G7 unfinished. He rapidly got into his stride, and, using the top of the table, reached the 500mark. A long string of nurseries brought him within reach of GOO, when he went to hand and brought the balls together for a top of the table spell, manipulating the balls like a magician, delicate cannons, keeping the white almost within -a six-inch circle of the billiards spot, playing the red winners anil piling up the

score. He put on 140 without going back to baulk. At 755 the red, cut finely for the winner, hovered on the edge of the pocket, and looked for a fraction of a second as if it would stay there, then fell, and he went on with the break. From SOO to 1000 took seven minutes dead to compile, incl tiding a run of 73 nursery cannons, magnificently played along the top and side-cushions. Turning the corner he had to make two most delicate kiss-cannons to keep on the right side, and these he brought off, working down to the middle pocket. The top of the table saw him reach his points with 1118 unfinished, with a nursery cannon position, and every prospect of creating a new world’s record. The present record, held by him, is 1415. The session only occupied 40 minutes for the 750, and an all-rohnd game of 500 was played for the benefit of spectators. A NEW ZEALAND RECORD. At the night session Lindrum carried on with his unfinished break of 1142. A short series of nurseries brought him to the middle pocket, where lie played a white loser, leaving the cannon on and bringing the balls together again. At 11S7 he played a very delicate cannon and the two. white balls remained in contact, so that the balls had to be “spotted” for Lindrum to play from hand, and lie failed at the white loser. The break of 11S7 was a New Zealand record, just beating McConachy’s record of 1182 throe years ago. There then followed a particularly tight run of the balls for both players, necessitating many spectacular shots to score and gain a position. After a profitless spell for both players, McConaeliy gave a taste of his true quality and put. on a 275 break, and time was called with the New Zealand champion in a beautiful top of flic table position with a break of 2G7 unfinished. Play continues to-day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.ni. and S p.m. to 10 p.m.
