INQUEST OPENED
THORNDON QUAY FATALITY. An inquest was opened before the Coroner (Mr. E. Page, S.M.) in the Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon for the purpose of inquiring into the death of Samuel Sloane Oliver, aged 41, it resident of Hastings, who was knocked down by a motor-car on Thorndon Quay at about 1.30 a.tn. last Saturday and who died on arrival at the hospital. Chief-Detective Ward conducted the inquest. Mr. W. Perry appeared for deceased’s widow and Mr. W. E. Leicester for the driver of the car. Yesterday’s proceedings were only for the purpose of identification.
Evidence was given by the widow, Alcxina Oliver, who said that her husband was a foreman in charge of the butchery departments at the Hasting! abattoirs. He left Hastings for Wellington on October 4 and was to have been away a fortnight or three weeks Witness had identified the body as that of her husband. Proceedings were then adjourned until 2.15 p.m. on October IS.
