LAWN TENNIS
DR. PARK APPOINTED SOLE WELLINGTON SELECTOR HELPING THE JUNIORS At a recent meeting the Management Committee of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association decided, with regard to junior tennis, to appoint its delegates to the N.Z.L.T.A. in order to supplement Mr. W. J. Melody’s scheme for a junior national tournament every two years in Wellington. It was also decided to hold doubles tournaments whenever opportunity should offer during the present season. These will be conducted in the American manner, sixteen senior players being paired with sixteen promising juniors. The association is taking steps, in cooperation with the Schools’ Association, to arrange for more coaching classes at Miramar during the season. This is an American idea, elementary instruction in the making of strokes being given to a large class drawn up in mass formation. A conrect style of play is thus developed in learners from the start. The association will use Ayers balls for championship matches. - . A sub-committee has been set up to investigate the possibilities of co-operative action through the association in the purchase of tennis material. Membership returns from ten clubs at present to hand show an increase m membership from 483 to 6-6. At last night’s meeting of the association the motion was carried unanimously that Dr A. Park should be asked to accept the position of sole selector of the team to meet the Englishmen on their approaching visit. - It is officially notified that Mr. A. L. France has been appointed secretary of the ladder committee.
