The untimely demise of Quaecee was a severe blow to her owner-trainer, G. Mur-ray-Aynsley, and incidentally removed from the turf one of the most promising three-year-old fillies working at liiccarton. She had had only one race, finishing strongly in second place behind First Raid in the Trial Plate at Ashburton last month, after experiencing a rocky passage in the early stages of the race. She was by Paladin from Disdainful, dam of Scoff, and taking a line through her recent track essays, in company with Chide, she gave indications of doing good service for the stable in the near future. Her owner had a chance recently of selling the filly, but was not anxious to part with her unless at a price within close reach of the four-figure mark. An examination of the track revealed that there was nothing likely to cause the mishap—it was merely a case of one of those unfortunate happenings which a thoroughbred is always likely to encounter. _
