COOK’S LANDING
CELEBRATED AT GISBORNE (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Gisborne, October 8. Representatives of public bodies aud a large gathering of the public attended at the Cook Memoriar’on the Kaiti beach yesterday afternoon to celebrate the 159th landing of Captain James Cook. A short religous service was followed by speeches honouring the great navigator, and by the placing of wreaths on the monument. Reference was made to the fact that the ceremony was taking place on the actual site where Captain Cook first
set foot on New Zealand soil.
Air. J. R, Kirk, who presided, read a message from the chairman and council of the Royal Colonial Institute associating themselves with the honour paid to the memory of Captain Cook. Messages were also received from the Prime Minister, the Hon. K. S. Williams, and the Returned Soldiers’ Association.
A stirring address was delivered by Dr. Mcllraith.
