CRICKET

TOWN v. COUNTRY

BADCOCK TO PLAY FOR OLD • ' BOYS The Management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association met last night, Mr. C. H. Wilson presiding. , Town v. Country. In reply to a circular letter requesting suggestions for a date for the Town :v. Country match, the Taranaki Association and the Nelson Association replied. Taranaki Association did not suggest any date, but asked the Wellington Association to do so. It applied for a visit from a Wellington representative team, considering this as easily the bestmethod of encouraging cricket in the provinces. Nelson Association thought that a.-.,mid-week match early in December would suit.

■The chairman thought that the date might have been the cause of the loss' in the previous year. The association in the, past and in the present always took the greatest trouble to encourage cricket in the districts, he said. Mr. J. S. Hanna suggested as an alternative to the Town v. Country game, the sending of the teams to each of the Country districts. Each "team would have several first-class play'ers. The chairman said the financing of all teams would be too difficult. It would require at least £5O to send a team away. . The matter was held over and re-' ferred to the senior management committee to see what players were available. Old Boys Take Badcock.

Mr. P. B. Broad said that the senior management committee, recommended that F. T. Badcock’s services be allo-' cated to the Old Boys’ team. His committee had been unanimous in this: decision, and placed the prospective teams in the order as University, Old Boys, and Midland, according to the number of younger players. University, when asked, did not accept, so Old Boys took the offer. ’ The recommendation was confirmed. Bowling. Some discussion took place on the encouragement of the bowling talent offering in Wellington. - The chairman said that m the past the association was after batsmen and not bowlers. More attention should be given to bowling practice. Mr. P. B. Broad said it would be advisable to cut out one night’s batting and have only bowling. The chairman said that right throughout the world bowling was becoming the most important question. The bowler should be taught to use his brains as well as the batsmen. The better the wickets the more the bowler must use his head. They had a coach, but were not teaching the bowlers anything. This matter will be brought before the notice of the coach. A Trophy Bat. A bat was received from Mr. L. McKenzie, now in England, to be presented to the most useful player on the Wellington side during the next Slunket Shield matches. It was signed first by Lord Harris, A. W. Carr, and Arthur Gilligan, who captained English sides in Test matches, and also by a number of other famous cricketers. A letter of thanks was sent to Mr. McKenzie. Junior Matters. The Junior Championship Committee has classified the junior teams as follow: Junior A.—lnstitute, Wellington, Old Boys, Petone, Hutt," Midland, Kilbirnie, University, Karori,. and Johnsonville. Junior B.—Wellington, Old Boys, Institute, Y.M.C.A., Porirua, Hutt, Wellington College, University, Marist, and Railways. Junior C.—Wellington, Kilbirnie, Midland, Wellington College, Diarist, “Dominion,” "Evening Post,” Stop Out, Hutt, and Y.M.C.A. Junior D. —Wellington, Eastbourne, Johnsonville, Midland, University, Karori, Petone, Institute, and Khandallah. Hours of Play.

It was decided that a special meeting be called to amend the hours of play to suit daylight saving time. It was recommended that play should start at 2 p.m. and end at 6.30, or six o’clock at the pre-, sent time, in October and March, and at 7 p.m. from the end of October onwards. This would thus be 6.30 p.m. as the present time. A special meeting will be called for next Monday night to ratify these recommendations. Mr. P. B. Broad reported from the senior championship committee that Institute will have Y.M.O.A.’s old wickets and Marist and Railways will have a wicket each on the Basin.
