THE RACING WORLD

FIRST DAY’S EVENTS AT AUCKLAND DECIDED

SUPREMACY WINS WELCOME STAKES

HANDICAPS FOR WELLINGTON SPRING MEETING

. i 4-Tm rtziv’s events of the Auckland Racing, which “IXoia”!“S wo™, Supromoer, and tl. sp.tot was woo by Branson.

FIRST DAY AT ELLERSLIE CONCLUDED SUPREMACY WINS WELCOME STAKES SPRINT TO BRONSON (Bv Telegraph—From “The Watcher. ) 1 Auckland, October S. The balance of the first day’s programme of tlie Auckland Racing Club s spring meeting, postponed from day, was concluded at Ellerslie to-day. Despite the fact that only three races remained to be disposed of, free admission served to attract a large attendance and the /meeting was held under good weather C ° Supremacy easily held his P° si f t^ n th a i | thp best two-year-old seen out so tar tnis season; and Von the Welcome S takes very easily from Hunting Day and Eaglet. Branson scored well m the I lying Han cap, with Goshawk second and White *The inquiry into the Aussie incident in the Shorts Handicap, on Saturday, was concluded, and the stewardsadvised A. Tinker the rider of the horse, to .perse vere in’future if he had a chance of filling a The e 'totalisator turnover for t}je eight races (five on Saturday, and three to day), was £53,770, as against £69,821 10s. on the first day of- last year, a d crease of £16,00l 10s.WELCOME STAKES. The two-year-old classic was the best of good things for the hot favourite Su nremacy.’ Hunting Day from No. 1, was first out, First Money getting badly left, while Carl Idan and Ceremony were also slow away At the end of a furlong Supremacy ran past Hunting Day, and took the lead by a coupie three or four lengths back Clever was running third, about five lengths ahead-of Eaglet. 1 So they ran to the straight, where Hunting Day threw out a chai lenge. He had no chance of reaching bu nremacy, who won by two lengths. Eaglet finished over Clever for third money four lengths farther back, and behind Clever came First Money and Ceremony. The winner maintained the he showed at Avondale. Hunting Day was much handier throughout, and will have a better chance over six. furlongs. At the same time Supremacy is a good one being a well-built gelding and possessing a nice style of galloping. Eaglet ran a good race, and in a handicap looks an early possibility. Clever was disappointing. First Money showed exceptional speed once he got going, and is apparently above the ordinary. Supremacy carried nearly half the investments. GORDON HANDICAP. The majority of the big field in the hack mile had no chance from the start. Royal Lineage was always well placed, and after Micrometer had led for a furlong Royal Lineage took charge. He was attended to the straight by Ankitoa, Lun-

ette, Modest Boy and Winsome Boy, Micrometer leading the bunch. When in line Golden Wedding came with a fast run from the rear; he caught and passed Royal Lineage about thirty yards off the post, but the latter came agajn and got up to make a dead-heat. Arikitoa was a couple of lengths away third, with War Officer, Modest Boy, and Lunette next; Micrometer headed the bunch. Modest Boy should have been placed fourth.' It looked as if Royal Lineage should have won outright, and that his rider took things too confidently. Micrometer will be improved by the race; she drifted back in the middle stages and came on again at the finish. FLYING HANDICAP. Branson, carrying 21b. overweight, won the concluding event comfortably after being well placed throughout. White Fang was first out from Flying Juliet, Tinokoa and Branson, but Tinokoa soon dropped to the rear. Kaiti went up fast down the back,, and the order past the half and into the straight was White Fang, Kaiti, Flying Juliet, Branson, High Pitch, and The Fox. Branson came on and won by a couple of lengths from Goshawk, who beat White Fang by a length. Flying Juliet was fourth, witli Kaiti and Stormy handy, and then came Royal Doulton and Vivo. Goshawk had to come from a fair distance back or he might have made it harder for the winner. However, ,■ Branson won very comfortably. White Fang and Flying Juliet had every chance, and so did Kaiti. Stormy ran quite a fair race. Awarere was always in the ruck,

but at the half-mile he was going very strongly. He was too far back in the straight to have any chance, but the race should improve him. The Fox, who was favourite, faded out badly in the run home. Tinokoa drew No. 1, and being a slow beginner it spoiled his chance.
