“THE BENIGHTED PARTY”

Sir, —For two reasons, at least, I have thought that the “benighted party” would be a more appropriate title for the new party than the “United Party.” The first reason is that the new party does not know where it is going, nor what its platform is; and the second reason is that Sir Joseph Ward—the only knight available —is to lead it. In Bible times there were gathered together “everyone that was in distress . . . and everyone that was discontented” (1 Sam. xxii, 21). History is to-day repeating itself, since John Bright’s famous reference to the eave of Adullam. Certainly the new party is a benighted one. —I am, etc., SIGMA. Wellington, October 8.
