Parton, joint passenger manager o£ the White Star Line. London, from active service recently after 55 years’ employment in the White Star and associated lines. Known to Americans as the “Glad-hander," Mr. Parton received cable messages from all parts of the world congratulating him upon his services, and wishing him happiness in his retirement. Among the cablegrams that reached him was one from Mr. P. A. S. Franklin, president. of the International Mercantile Marine Company, New York. PANAMA CANAL TOLLS. The “Nautical Gazette” (New York) is supporting the movement of American shipping interests to bring about through legislative action an adjustment in. Panama Canal tolls. The recent financial report showing a profit of 17,000,000 dollars, or 3,00(1,000 in excess of that of. last year, it is suggested, points to a tendency on the part of the Government io make the Canal operation a profit-making proposition, and constitutes a decided handicap to American-llag ships. Receipts commensurate with the cost of maintenance, and a fair margin, are justifiable, but it has been the contention of the shipping industry for some time that canal tolls are exorbitant, and should be reduced. The average toll paid for transit through the Panama Canal is 4000 dollars a vessel, based on the rate of Idol. 20c. a ton, but at the .time the new Panama Pacific liner California went, through the canal on her maiden voyage, a toll of 15,000 was exacted for the passage through. At this time P. A. S. Franklin,, president of the International Mercantile Marine Company, operators of the California, voiced a protest nt tho existing rate, and his protest was but, a repetition of those which had gone before and those since. It is urged that an adjustment of canal tolls would be “one of the many ways, and an altogether logical way.” in which tho American merchant; marine could be aided toward successful nnd profitable operation.
