Having been denied the privilege of witnessing the landing of the Southern Cross, many people resorted to other means whereby they could tell their friends how they had some special connection with the ’plane (says the Ashburton “Guardian”). An Ashburton resident, in a loud voice, informed the passengers in a carriage of the late train the previous evening that he had been in touch with the machine all night per medium of his wireless set. “But I thought they couldn’t hear the wireless from the ’plane for about three hours?’ asked a neighbour. Not to be outdone, the first speaker declared: “Oh, yes, I couldn’t hear the wireless,, but I could hear the roar of the motors I"
