“SO ENGLISH!”
RUSSIAN VIEW OF NEW ZEALAND M. Cherkassky, father of Slmra Cherkassky, the brilliant pianist, thinks New Zealand a really wonderful country. He expresses amazement that in so short a time —less than a century—a new country could, become so marvellously developed. The first fortnight of his visit was spent in Christchurch, which had C e effect of making him believe he was in England, and only by exerting his common s re could he come to understand that he was at the exact Antipodes. “You are so very English,” said M. Cherkassky. “Everything look, and talk aud think like English. It is ver’ interesting to me. I did not think countries so far away down here would be so forward —advanced. Your people are English: all of you, everywhere I meet! It is not so in Australia. They are somewhat different. Perhaps it is the eli mate or something, but they seemed to have developed a character of their own. That is not so in New Zealand. You are so English. You make your places like England, and you plant the same trees. It is just wonderful how you have done it in just a few years.'’
