G. Duncan at the annual meeting of the Wellington Racing Club, “I must express the very sincere regret of all members at the loss sustained by the club In the death of Mr. J. B. Harcourt, who was president for a period of twenty-six years. This unprecedented tenure of oflice is a tribute to the high esteem in which ho had always been held by members. Mr. Harcourt worked unselfishly on behalf of the club, and his genial disposition endeared him to members and all others with whom he came in contact. It will be remembered that he provided the cup for the first Champion Plate: and, I am glad to sav, the stewards notified him early in the year that they had decided to change the name of the Champion Plate to the Harcourt Cup, out of compliment to his great services to the club.”
