COMPETITIONS

EVENTS CONCLUDED

MUSIC, SONG AND DANCE PRAISE FOR THE JUDGES The competitive events at the competitions, which have been large attendances to the lown Hall since August IS, concluded last niglit, when several interesting events were decided. There were a piano solo, recitation in character, operatic solo, sacred solo, a character story dance, a vocal duet, vocal solo with obligato, t sheauntriubhas, and many other items, all of which were pleasing to the audiThe president of the society (Mr. F. Campbell) said that before the adjudicators gave their decisions on the

final night, he would like to take the opportunity of saying how much their work is appreciated. It could be truly said that they all had given the public of their best. “Comparisons,” went on Mr. Campbell, “are perhaps odious, but I feel I must say that the adjudicators have fully maintained the standard one expects at the Wellington Festival. I feel that the judges have satisfied most of the competitors as their decisions have been well received.”

Commenting on the recitation In character the elocution judge (Mr. B. Gibb) said that a very good standard had been raaintaiued amongst the competitors, and it was difficult to select the winner as al? the recalls ran very 'close together. The standard had been more consistent throughout than in probably any other event he had judged at the competitions. The competitors had wisely made selections which suited them best, and the costumes and make-up were very effective. Referring to the elocutionary items at the Competitions Mr. Gibb said that the work had been of a high standard, and it was very pleasing indeed to have seen competitors so keen. Several performers were fine artists and showed considerable promise. The vocal and instrumental judge (Mr. Barnett), in referring to the work that he had judged, said that he had been disappointed with the violin, tenor, one of the bass section, and the soprano sections. The • contralto, mezzo, and the baritone sections, however, had been very good, indeed. “In my opinion,” stated Mr. Barnett, “the competitions are very valuable in these days of jazz and jangle. It is good to get together and hear a little decent music away from the noise. ■ I have no fault with jazz—some of it is very clever, but one can have too much of it at times:”
