BIBLE IN SCHOOLS

Sir, —Allow me space for a word or two in reply to “Golden Rule.” It is just because I sincerely believe in the Golden Rule that I object to making State teachers —servants of the State —conduct “religious exercises” that are not acceptable to all the religious denominations in the Dominion. Surely your correspondent, “Golden Rule,” has the intelligence to see that to make all the taxpayers of the Dominion pay for, or contribute towards paying for, the conducting of such “religious exercises” in our National schools is a flagrant breach of the golden rule? Is “Golden Rule” man enough, gentleman enough, or Christian enough to state (over his own name) that (to take oneexaniple) it is just or honest to make Roman Catholics contribute towards paying for the religious instruction of Protestant children? Is that what the golden rule means for him? If so, he should be heartily ashamed of appealing to the golden rule. —I am, etc., HUGH MACKENZIE. Wellington, September 3.
