WELLINGTON COLLEGE

RECONSTRUCTION TO START THIS YEAR Commencement this financial year of the reconstruction of the Wellington Boys’ College was foreshadowed by the Minister of Education (lion. R. A. Wright) in the House of Representatives yesterday, when replying to a question by Mr. T. Forsyth (Wellington East). Mr. Forsyth asked the Minister whether, in view of the urgent necessity of making more adequate class room provision at the college, he would inform the House what was proposed to be proceeded with this year. Replying, the Minister reminded Mr. Forsyth that something had been done for the college. A hostel had been erected, also a memorial hall, the cost of which had been subscribed by old boys of the school. “In respect to the question of additional class rooms,” the Minister added. “I admit that the building is in very bad condition. That cannot be denied. I have hud plans and specifications prepared for the new building. The central feature (the memorial hall) has already been erected. It is proposed to build flanking blocks right and left, with class rooms on the pavilion principle at the rear. A certain amount of excavation work will be required, and if will be necessary to build a basement Io the front portion of both flanking blocks. T hope it will be possible to start the work during this financial year, and next year to complete the first portion of the building.”
