COMPETITIONS

NOW DRAWING TO A CLOSE SOLO OF NEW ZEALAND AUTHORSHIP RECITAL IN CHARACTER The 192 S musical and elocutionary festival conducted by the Wellington Competitions Society is now drawing to a close, and with the conclusion of tonight’s session awards in all sections will have been made. To-morrow night, and again on Saturday night, demonstration concerts will be given by prize-winners, a well-varied programme of interesting as well as entertaining items having been selected for each evening. Another excellent programme was provided at the morning, afternoon, and evening sessions of the competitions yesterday. The classes comprised tenor solo, vocal solp by a New Zealand composer, soprano solo, English folk song, character dances for those over 16 and children under 9, sword dance, clog dance, recital in character, the second section of the piano solo for the society’s scholarship for those from. 13 to 15 years, and the first portion of the piano solo class open to any amateur over 16 years, for a gold watch valued at ten guineas, presented by F. J. Pinny, Ltd. When announcing his awards at the close of the evening session, the "judge of the vocal and instrumental section, Mr. G. V. Barnett said that the English folk-song class for gentlemen liail provided a highly interesting contest with some line descriptive interpretations. -Mr. Barnett remarked that he had been disappointed with the tenor singing he had heard at the festival. “I think,” he said, “that a tenor is a rarer bird in Wellington than in Sydney.”

The judge in the elocution section, Mr. B. Gibb, said that very good performances had been given by the four recall competitors in the open class recitation in character. He mentioned that one of the performers had portrayed Cleopatra and that there was usually a misconception as to this character of Shakespeare's. Cleopatra, as a rule, he said, was visualised as a large, robust woman, but actually she was a thin, small type of person. At least, that was his interpretation from a careful reading of history and Shakespeare. He thought it well in recitation in character for the performers to adopt characterisations which suited them physically. To-morrow, between 11 o'clock and noon, both Mr. Barnett and Mr. Gibb will meet competitors, who will have the benefit of a personal talk on their work at the competitions from these two judges.
