FROM FAR AND NEAR Murderer Hanged.— Clifford Hulmc, found guilty of the murder of his employer, HarokTSmith, was hanged at Fremantle Gaol. —Press Assn. Steamer Short of Coal.—The steamer Halerie, en route from Makatea Island to Australia, reports by wireless that she is short. of coal and will arrive at Auckland on Thursday to replenish her bunkers. —Press Assn. Hutt Suburban Trains.—The Railway Department announces that commencing to-day the morning suburban trains on the Hutt and Waterloo lines will be restored to normal excepting the early train to Waterloo, which will leave Wellington at 7.8 a.m. instead of 7.15 a.m. as hitherto. Casualties in Khargpur Riots.—An Australian Press Association message from Delhi states that tlie total casualties at Khargpur in the recent riots were six killed, all, except one, Alohammedans, and twenty Sikhs injured. A detachment of 140 Sikhs entrained from Calcutta in order, as they alleged,, to investigate, but they were headed off on arrival at Khargpur. As a precautionry measure the railway workshops were closed to-day. Cattle for Apia.— When five of nine purebred Herel’ords had been placed on board the Maui Pornare at Auckland, for shipment to Apia, it was found that there was not room for the other four. The shippers unloaded the five, and all the animals were sent to Westfield to await shipment by the Tofua next Saturday.—Press Assn. Dunedin Improvement Proposal Defeated.—A poll was taken at Dunedin yesterday on the question of raising a loan of £26,500 for the purchase by the City Council of the Royal Arcade property and the construction of a new street. The result of the poll was as follows: In favour of the proposal, 983; against, 4842. —Press Assn. Man Found Hanging.—“l am fed up with poverty aud ill-health, and am taking a short-cut out of it,” stated a letter addressed to the coroner in the pocket of a man found hanging from an overhead railway bridge near the New Plymouth station last night. The man was Andrew Binnie, a native of Scotland, aged about 60. He is believed to have come from Palmerston North. He was not dead ,wben cut down, but died iu hospital.—Press Assn.
