COMPETITIONS

YESTERDAY’S PRIZE-WINNERS TRADITIONAL FOLK SONGS HUMOROUS CHARACTER SKETCH What a theatrical manager would term a "capacity house" greeted the performers at the Wellington competitions last night, when another varied and entertaining programme of musical, vocal, dancing and elocutionary items was provided. The competitions are now in their third week. Good progress has been made, and all events have been decided according to schedule. At the conelusion of each performance the nidges made a point, when announcing their awards, of briefly outlining the faults of competitors and of telling them how their mistakes could be avoided and improvements made. This friendly advice is greatly appreciated by the competitors. , Yesterday’s programme comprised an operatic or dramatic bass solo, a folk or traditional English song for ladies, a folk or traditional Scottish song for gentlemen, humorous character sketch, dance duo, humorous recitation, and the second section of the piano solo for the Bristol scholarship. In addition to the recall numbers carried forward from the morning and afternoon sessions, a Spanish dance was included in the programme for the night session. ' “It was an interesting class and there was some quite good work,’* said Miss F. E. Emery when announcing that two Wellington ‘dancers, Eunice Scott and Marjorie Penman, had won the dance duo for children over 9 and under 12. Miss Emery said that these two girls had given a good character performance, while their technique was good. The two to secure second place had also done , well, and their time and rhythm was extremely good. Miss Emery remarked that there had been some very tine dancing. but she thought that m many cases the choice could have been much better.
