DOMINION BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEARLY TWO HUNDRED ENTRIES By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier. September 4. One hundred and sixty entries have been received for the New Zealand badminton championships opening at Napier to-morrow evening and continuing . oi Thursday and Friday evenings. lhe virnting players come principally from Auckland and Wanganui. the preceding season, when a vicld was compensated by exceptionally favourable prices. Under good organisation, however, the industry is racing the future confidently. . * 'As regards the poultry industry f tn<? export of eggs is being resumed tins year with the financial support from the bov eminent taking the form of a guaranteed return to the produce shippers, loultri keeping as a sideline for our small farmers and farm workers has great possibili ties and the industry is worthy of every attention. Good Honey Crop. “A good honey crop was secured by bee-keepers in general, and the exportable surplus of this crop seems likely to increase. 'ln line with the Government s policy of promoting the smaller rural industries. it has been decided to also extend financial support to the bee-keepmg industry in connection with the export trade, and arrangements, are now in hand. Special encouragement is being given to small culture in various other directions, for example, bv the introduction ot better species of mulberry trees for sericultural purposes. With the steady growth of our population these minor rural activities are every year gaining in extent and scope. The development of a strong force of small-holders in this country, complementary to the larger-scale rural industries, is eminently desirable. “The hemp industry of late has had to meet much less favourable market conditions than have prevailed for a considerable time, and production has also shown a shrinkage. However, with the help ot certain economic adjustments, scientific research, and more improvement in milling practice, all of which factors are receiving attention, a return to prosperity may be confidently anticipated. Use of Fertilisers. The Minister notes the increased productivity due to the greater use of fertilisers, supplies of which were made available cheaply because of the war between the fertiliser companies and of the railway freight concessions, and emphasises the value of the co-operation between the Departments concerned in the application of science to the problems confronting farmers.
