POLICE STATION LEASEHOLD
COMPROMISE ON CHARGES
Following an application by Hie Public Works Department to the City Council for a reduction of charges in reference to the police station site lease in Johnston Street, the leasehold committee has recommended that all legal charges except disbursements be remitted in consideration of assistance freely, afforded by the Department; that the council could not interfere in the matter of the valuer’s fee, this being fixed by statute; and that the excision of a covennntujs to rates could not be agreed to as, although the Government was not liable to pay rates, a tenant purchasing from the Government would be,' and the usual clause must be inserted to meet the case of the Government selling the lease. Councillor J. Burns said the usual procedure had been adopted, and the committee’s recommendation was a reasonable compromise. The report was adopted.
