One effect of the adoption of religious teaching in .State schools would necessarily be a State subsidy for denominational schools proportionate to the number of children taught. This seems to us to be iuescapable. In plain English it means that the introduction of religious teaching into State schools would lead to the genera! establishment of denominational schools subsidised by the State, and, ultimately, to the collapse of the State system and the substitution of a denominational system. Supporters of the present Bill contend that such a development could not occur, but we believe it to be not only possible but even inevitable, if - ever the secular character of the State schools is destroyed.—Lyttelton “Times.”
