MILK SCHEMES
AUCKLAND REORGANISING PRAISE FOR WELLINGTON UNDERTAKING In common with other large cities of the world, Auckland is becoming concerned as to the best method of milk supply for her citizens. Visitors to Wellington yesterday were Messrs. W. 11. Madill and J. M. Montgomerie, who were recently appointed by the. Auckland Whole-milk Producers’ Association to investigate the operation of the Wellington municipal milk undertaking, particularly as affecting the average price paid to the producer, the average price paid by the consumer, and the average cost of distribution. The object of the investigation is to recommend a complete reorganisation of the Auckland milk trade by the farmers on lines similar to those existing in Wellington if it is found that the result of such investigations warrant a move in this direction. Mr. Madill is a well-known city business man of Auckland, who also has considerable farming interests clcsc to the city. Mr. Montgomerie is a-well-known Auckland farmer and chairman of the Auckland Milk Company, a cooperative concern which is retailing milk on behalf of a group of farmers. Messrs. Madill and Montgomerie informed a “Dominion” reporter yesterday that they arc convinced that the Wellington method discloses a much more economical system of distribution. As a . matter of fact, the producer on the outskirts of Wellington receives approximately Id. per gallon more than his fellow producer on the outskirts of Auckland, and at the same time the consumer in Wellington is able to buy his milk at one-third of a penny per quart cheaper than the consumer in Auckland.
