FROM FAR AND NEAR

Mails Reach London. —The Postal authorities have received cabled advice that mails which left Auckland on July 3, per 11.M.5. Niagara, via Vancouver, arrived in London on August 1.

Decree Nisi Granted. —In the Supreme Court yesterday Mr. Justice MacGregor granted a decree nisi on the undefended petition of Douglas Bostock MacKersey, who sued his wife. Hilda Mary Noeline MacKersey, for divorce on the • ground of mutual separation.

Land for Street Widening.—The City Council last night appointed Monday. August 20, at 7.30 p.m., at the Council Chamber, Town Hall, for hearing the objection of Mr. G. G. MacQuarrie to the taking of land at Willis Street for street-widening purposes (H. Nimmo s property).

Inquiry Info Farmer’s Death.—Au inquest was held at Hamilton yesterday into the death of Samuel Ernest Kemp, aged 59. a farmer, at his home at Claudelands. The evidence showed that a bottle of poison was found in deceased's pocket. The inquest was adjourned.—Press Assn.

Books for .Jubilee Institute.—The City Council last night agreed that 148 volumes of literature for the blind, at present stored at Newtown Library, be donated to the Jubilee Institute for the Blind at Auckland, where they will be circulated to readers throughout New Zealand.

Wahnarino Fishing Licenses.—Amending regulations for trout fishing in the Waimarino acclimatisation district gazetted last night, provide that licenses may be issued at the following rates:—Licenses for men : Twenty shillings for the whole season. Licenses for women and for boys attending school or under the age of sixteen years: Five shillings for the whole season. Licenses available for one week: Two shillings and- sixpence. K -

Cotton Growing at Niue.—A further attempt to reintroduce the cotton industry to Niue has been made, states the annual report of tbe Niuean Administration. Three hundred pounds of seed was obtained from the British Cotton-growers’ Association. Manchester, England. Ths seed was distributed among the natives of the various villages, and was planted in the early part of February this year. It is yet too early to say what the results will be; so far the plants in some villages appear to be doing well, but in others at least 75 per cent, of the seed failed to germinate.
