UNIFORMITY WANTED

QUESTION OF COUNTY BY-LAWS The dilliculty of obtaining a set of by-laws suitable to all counties in the Dominion was pointed out at the annual conference of the Counties’ Association yesterday. Mr. J. S. Connett (Taranaki) moved a remit providing that the association’s solicitor should be asked io draft a model set of. by-laws for all counties covering all matters not governed by the motor-lorry regulations, motor vehicle regulations, and public health regulations, so that uniformity would exist in local government law throughout New Zealand. Mr. J.. Ritchie (Vincent) said that: a number of counties in the South Island had just done what the remit suggested, at a cost of £llOO, and they would be only too willing to let. other counties have a copy of these by-laws, which were working satisfactorily. Several North Island delegates quoted instances of by-laws being attacked in the courts. A model set of uniform by-laws weald save a great deal of expense. The president (Mr. A. E. .lull) jocularly remarked that they all knew that Otago had been for some years past providing finance to enable North Island public bodies to carry on, and it was pleasing to know that, with their customary generosity, they had now provided a model set of by-laws for the whole of the Dominion. What they wanted was to have a remit dealing with lawyers’ fees. The remit was defeated on the voices.
