It was a very plcasnnl surprise and wits turned on by the president in recognition of the big endeavour and successful effort of tlie club members in winning tlie Vosseler Shield tlie previous week. An old member who made lirs appearance on Saturday was .1. French, mid l.e showed good form. It is probable that Tatty, who a few weeks back hurt his ankle, will not bo running again -this season, as a complete spell from running hns boon ordered. The most outstanding novice this year is R ilitson. who. by constant training, liasclimbed right to the front ranks. In ..the novice race lie was fourth. and coming into competition With tlie most experienced runners lie. gained eighth position in tlie Philp' Cup, of. three miles, mid quite recently won a five-milc race for the Byrne Cup. In the. Vosseler Shield race, of 10 miles, tills young runner finished eigliieenth mid was Olympic’s sixth man Iu tlie bands of a good trainer be should be tlie makings of a champion. Despite the amount of sickness Ibal Ihu members of this club have experienced, 2D runners lined up for the' B grade championship run over one lap of the Vosseler course on Saturday afternoon. The club's supporters were out in force, tho ladies being well in evidence. Mrs. W. Weston gave the boys a good dispatch and D. Thom, Stoles,’P. Ilarlen, and Fraser shot to the front. The pace found some of the leaders out after a mile on the sand had been covered. Fraser, running with a nlco stride, took the lead from here, and, going well, led for the'rest of the journey, beating P. nation home by 70 yards. Stoles filled third place, some 40 yards back. The sealed handicap was won by L. Stoles, with Willis a close second. B. Fraser, whose time was 34min. 34sec., ran a great race when one considers he in only 16. He has a nice style and reserves energy by using his head. P Harlen is to be congratulated also on bls fine run, as it Is known that his opportunities of training of late have been few. L. Stoics, although finishing third, did not show the form of a few weeks ago. Willis, in gaining second place in tho sealed handicap, gave a much improved showing. . ' A. Hivon could not turn out owing to illness. .. H. Wickham was expected to run well up, but in his case the form shown was very bad. In a number of cases lack of training told its tale, and it is up to the' members to take advantage of the training facilities available.
