LOSS OF SCOW HERALD
PRELIMINARY INQUIRY HELD /. ■■ (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, July 17. A preliminary inquiry into the loss of the scow Herald, whieli struck Fiat Rock last Saturday morning, was held at. Auckland by Captajn- Steward, local superintendent of. mercantile marine. A report of the inquiry has been forwarded to the Marine Department, which will decide whether a nautical inquiry will be necessary. - --.ty--.;--■ Captain Steward. has communicated with the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society at Dunedin, requesting that- a small amount of relief should be granted to the crew of the Herald. , IS IT THE HERALD? : The Secretary, General Post Office, advises that the following advice hasbeen received from* the steamer Norfolk : “White two-masted scow very close in shore in approx. 36.31 J S. 175/31 E.> white mast heads apparently upright. Thought might be missing scow from Flat Rock- Saw two launches to westward of it, some three miles from it. Saw no sign of life on her; no sails on her; too to see itactiially. <jn rocks.” - ’
