By 'l'L’legraph.—t’resH Association, , linercargiH, July 17. For soiue lime friction has existed between certain members of the Invercargill Borough Council, including the Mayor (Mr. J. Miller) and tlie engineer (Mr,E. A. Guniblcy). This culminated last night in tlie confirmation by seven votes to six of a clause in the Works Committee's report terminating (he engineer’s engagement by three months’ notice and relieving him of his duties from to-day. Amendments deferring the question for three months and referring tlie question to an independent tribunal were, defeated. 'flic opponents of the motion contended that Mr. Gambler had-proved highly efficient iu street, formation, and had saved the council £25,000. The engineer circulated amongst, the councillors a letter replying to-what be termed deliberate untruths about his work. In conclusion, he stated: "I was under the, impression that victimisation and harassing of myself had been dropped, and I was to be allowed to continue without the worry which renders efficiency impossible.”
