FROM FAR AND NEAR Matches Taken into Mine.—-Janies Gibb was fined £2 with costs for taking two matches iuto the Dobson Mine (states a Press Association, message from Greymouth). Guilty of Forgery.—ln the Dunedin Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr. 11. W. Bundle, S.M., a young man, Henry Milton Bates, was charged with forging orders for the supply of goods to the total value of £3O 10s. He pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. — Special Service. Trawler Master Fined. — William George Love], for putting out to sea without a certificate of survey for the trawler Ohinemuri, was fined £lO at Napier. Mount Morgan Aline to be Reopened.— A Press Association message from Brisbane states that a southern group of financiers and mining men announce their intention of reopening the Mount Morgan mine, the capital for which will not exceed a quarter of a million sterling. Girl Acquitted of Embezzlement.— Eileen Wall, a typist, charged at Brisbane witli falsifying accounts and embezzling £SOOO, was acquitted amid cheers from within and without the Court. Tlie girl’s employers admitted that the handwriting in the falsified bank book was not Wall’s.—Press Assn. Connnunicatjons with China.—The Secretary, General Post Office, notifies that advice has been received that communication with Tientsin and Peking is totally interrupted, and that messages for places north of Chefoo will only be accepted at the sender’s risk. Missing Man A reward of £5O is offered for information as to the whereabouts of William George Murdoch, aged 25, of 33 Queen Street, Petone, who has been missing since June 27. He was last: seen leaving a taxi at the corner of Manners and Cuba Streets, at 2 a.m. on that date. A description of the missing man appears in the advertising columns. Murdoch was employed at the Petone Workshops, and his parents reside in the Auckland district Illegal Packing of Tomatoes.—Mr. Lawry, S.M., gave reserved judgment at Christchurch yesterday in a case in which Robert Young was charged with offering tomatoes for sale at Invercargill, packed iu a manner contrary to the regulations. The alleged offence was that the top layers were good and of fair size, ■ with small fruit at the bottom of the case. For the defence, it was contended that the regulations were ultra vires, but the Magistrate held that the regulations were clearly within the scope of the Act. Defendant was fined 205.,' and costs.—Press Assn.
