DEATH OF COMMANDER OF AQUITANIA ON ARRIVAL OF LINER AT SOUTHAMPTON

London, July 15.

Sir James Charles, Commander of the Aquitania and Commodore of the Cunard Line, died under dramatic circumstances at the end of his 728th Atlantic crossing, after which he had intended to retire. He became ill on entering Cherbourg, but he insisted on staying on the bridge till the ship berthed. Internal haemorrhage supervened on the crossing to Sir James Charles. Southampton, and he arrived unconscious, and died in a few minutes.

He was knighted for war service, and carried in the Aqultania thousands of troops to France from America. [Commodore Sir James Thomas Walter Charles was 63 years of age, and had been Commodore of the Ctinard Fleet since 1921. He went to sea in 1880, and rose to the rank of commander in 1907.
