BAD AEROPLANE CRASH

IMPERIAL AIRWAYS ’PLANE FOUR KILLED (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, July 13. An Imperial Airways machine crashed while undergoing a test flight after overhauling, near London to-day, and four of the aerodrome staff were killed. They included a member of the Aeronautical Inspection Staff, named Hall, and two girl typists, employed at the aerodrome, who had requested a flight.. The pilot. Captain SpaffOrd, and another employee, were also injured. The machine was not one of tf>e regular air liners, but was a small singleengined biplane, occasionally used for conveying excess freight.

MOST SERIOUS FOR SEVERAL YEARS (Australian Press Association.) Loudon, July 13. The air crash at Croydon is the most serious Imperial Airways disaster for several years. One of those killed. was an aircraft inspector. The others killed were all employees of the aerodrome, including two most popular typists, who were being given a “joy ride.” The machine was quickly seen to be in difficulties. She nose-dived with a tilt and crashed into the hedgerow of a field near the aerodrome. The pilot and another, seriously injured, climbed out. Then the machine immediately burst into flames. Hundreds of people ran to try to extricate the passengers, but were tragically helpless. They could not go within ten yards of the inferno of flames. The machine was last used at the week-end to test the theory of the Loewenstein mystery, when a party of journalists were aboard. >

MEXICAN LINDBERGH KILLED

AEROPLANE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING (Australian Press Association.) (Rev. July 15. 5.5 p.m.) New York, July 13. A message from Chatsworth. New Jersey, states that Captain Emilio Carranza, Mexican Lindberg, was killed when lightning struck his aeroplane while the flyer was en route to Mexico. The aeroplane crashed Into a pine forest, where the almost indistinguishable body of the aviator was found by a berry-picker. Captain Carranza was recently received at Washington as an official good-will envoy of the Mexican Government. He was lavishly entertained and received glowing tributes in the American Press. He expressed a desire at his departure to return to Mexico City to his bride of less tlym a month.
