CHATHAM CUP FINAL PETONE DEFEAT MARIST WINS FOR Y.M.C.A., DIAMONDS, AND INSTITUTE Felons secured a not unexpected win over Marist 111 tjie local competition for the Chatham Cup by the odd goal in five; UIUJ. won at Hospital somewhat easily, Diamonds had a good ™ ora Thistle, while Institute had the best of seven goals against Seatoun.

RESULTS AT A GLANCE CHATHAM CUP. Petone 3, Marist 2. SENIOR A. Y.M.C.A. 4, Hospital 1. Diamonds 5, Thistle 2. Institute 4, Seatoun 3. SENIOR B. Waterside 2, Hutt 1. South Wellington 6, Thistle 0. PETONE TO REPRESENT WELLINGTON. MARIST FADE IN SECOND HALE'. Under perfect weather conditions, Marist and Petone met in the local Chatham Cup final at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. By sheer merit, but not in evidence until the second half, Petone won by three goals to 2. It was not an easily-won victory, and not until the final whistle was Petone acknowledged victors. Marist almost equalised late in the game—a crossbar and Haines's foot probably saved Petone an extra half hour’s play. The first half was lifeless, with Marist a shade the better side. The teams were as follow: — m Petone: McVean; Steel,-Haines; Farquhar, Campbell, Stobbs: McKenzie, Cameron, Leslie, Cleverley, James. Marist: G. Fitzgerald; Guinan, Rudolph; Kelly, Thomas, Burke; Barton, Marshment, Condon, Cudby, Scott. Referee: Mr. Jackson.

Marist kicked off, and almost immediately Marshment was able to shoot for goal. The fist of the Petone custodian shot out, and the ball was clear. But scarcely had the first 60 seconds gone before Petone had drawn first blood. Campbell sent the ball out to McKenzie and passed to Leslie, who cleverly thrust off Rudolph’s tackle to shoot straight at Fitzgerald. The Marist goalie saved well, but the ball hit Leslie as he ran forward and rebounded into the net. Petone 1, Marist 0. A lightning Marist attack swept the Petone defenders back on to their goal-line, with Cudby in possession; the shot went wido with Thomas measuring his length in the net. Two moreshots, one from Thomas, well saved, and the second from Barton, who missed by inches, and McVean breathed freely. It tvas not for long, though, as Condon and Cudby found it comparatively easy to break through the Petone defence. Cudby sent in a great shot, well saved by MeYean. Cudby led to the equaliser when he ran out to the wing when Scott was too far behind, and got possession, to lift the ball right in front of.l’etone’s goal for Condon to head in. Petone, 1; Marist 1. Good tackling prevented Petone from playing their favourite short passing game. A hard tussle in front of I’e.toiie’s goal led to a second brilliant goal by Condon. Marist. 2. Petone 1. The new Marist full back, Guinan, was a weak link, and. Rudolph was called on to do more than his share. Leslie was particularly active, and two of his shots nearly found the objective. Condon gaining possession from Thomas, almost, did the “hat trick.” Petone evened up when the ball travelled from Farquhar across to near the line where James, with a high, rapidly dropping shot,'scored. Marist 2, Petone 2. The interval came without further score. On play being resumed, Marist. were penalised just outside the penalty area, mid after Campbell’s shot was cleared, Farquhar got possession and pitched the ball at Leslie’s feet. Leslie, with his back to Fitzgerald, kicked overhead, the ball hitting a Marist. player, and rebounded to Mc Kenzie’s feet, who. running in from the wing, scored wbat was destined to be the last and winning goal of the match. Pe tone’s presence was now felt by Marist who presented a sharp contrast to their play of the first half. Petone, with almost perfect combination between halves and forwards, played the spectacular short-passing game. The Marist forwards, however, had not altogether faded out, and right to the last went for goals. Barton had to retire for a few minutes. Marist’s left-winger. Scott, was never troublesome. The main attacks against McVean 'were mostly launched through the centre, but Campbell, Farquhar, and Stubbs were particularly good in the last half-hour. The game ended in a win for Petone by o goals to 2, and the honour to represent Wellington in the provincial rounds of the Chatham Cup competition of 1928.

CHALLENGE CUP DIAMONDS EASY VICTORS; Diamonds aud Thistle met in the first round of the Challenge Cup on No. 2 ground at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, and the game ended with a rather easy victory to the championship leaders. At the interval the score was 2 all, and Thistle gave promise of better things in the second "half, which did not materialise. The teams were as follow:— Diamonds: Ewing; Guest, T. Wotherspoon; Bolt. G. Wotherspoon, McCormack; McLeod, Daniells, Smith, Fiudlay, Stark- , , Thistle: Flcleher; Jack, Hopper; Wheelan, Hnnlou, Kelly; Houston, Campbell. Lothiau, Cunningham, Honeyman. Referee: Mr. B. Martin. The opening play was even, both goals being assailed in turn. Diamonds led the scoring. Smith finding the net. Diamonds 1, Thistle 0. It was not until Diamonds were two up, the second being scored by McLeod, that Thistle really set out to score. Their first was scored by Fletcher from a penalty kick, and before half time Lothian evened the score. Early in the second half Daniells put Diamonds in the lead, and from then out Thistle were trailing behind. Stark added the fourth Diamond goal, and later had a further chance from a penalty kick, but failed. Before the end Smith scored, the final score being: Diamonds 5, Thistle 2. INSTITUTE BEAT SEATOUN A CLOSE GAME.

Institute and Seatoun provided a willing encounter at Kelburn Park, the former team just getting home by one goal. Institute played a fine forward game, May and Dickenson being particularly noticeable in this department Seatoun got going straight away, and Smyth racing down on the left, sent behind. Institute forced a corner, butMcWilliams cleared . Institute came again, and a smart pass to Dickenson saw Wyatt beaten with a good shot. Institute 1, Seatoun 0. A dashing run by Grimstone on the right saw him centre, but the goalie saved, Kershaw got possession, and sent in the equaliser. Seatoun 1, Institute 1, At. this stage Smyth received a knock, which compelled him to leave the field. Two corners in succession to Seatoun gave Kershaw a chance, and he made no mistake, scoring with a Jiead&t & Institute

rallied, and Maddocks beat Wyatt with a rather weak shot. Up till half-time Institute were the aggressors, both Dickenson and Slay adding further goals. Institute 4, Seatoun 2. . . The second half was a repetition of the first, but both teams were responsible for faulty shooting. Harrop registered Seatoun’s third goal. The game ended with the score: Institute 4, Seatoun 3. Mr. O'Sullivan carried the whistle.

Y.M.C.A. BEAT HOSPITAL LOSERS LACK FINISH. Y.M.C.A. took their best team to Hospital on Saturday and further consolidated their position with a good win over the home team by four goals to one. A number of supporters accompanied the team. Hospital put up a good fight, but could not finish well, while the Y.M.C.A. forwards were fast and aggressive and gave the local custodian a busy time. Lucas saved some good shots for Y.M.C.A., whose defence was solid. LOWER GRADE RESULTS SECOND A. Y.M.C.A. 1, Wadestown 1. SECOND B. Institute 5, Seatoun 0. Diamonds 3, Hutt 1.
