SOME NEW GLASSWORK

Glasswork has become, so varied and there'are so many different kinds, ot glass just now that no new manifestation ot it Comes exactly as a surprise. •’‘ Neverthe--less the exiguous little glass figures which are in fashion just now show such economy of means as to be very attractive and evocative of curiosity as to how they produce their effect. At first sight they look like long streaks of blue or white glass, blown out a little and liaviin- some resemblance to the human figure. They gradually resolve themselves into dancers of the most supple description with a remarkably clever suggestion of individual gestures. Round the ■waist of the ladies are sometimes little crooked pieces of wire which just as easily resolve themselves into ballet skirts. It is like the suggestion of. a pencil stroke, vivid,, yet elusive; solid, .yet .extraordinarily evanescent. These little ■glass figures are prized in Paris just now for their force of suggestion. So also are the gold-fish bowls, which become more and more elaborate, and which, in addition to elaborate incising and designs on them, such as a map of the world, have the fish as actors on the scene. Sometimes these are electrically lighted, so that they form a kind of lamp with moving shadowy figures in it. The glass tree is also growing steadily more 1e... orate. Made with a. perfect cascade ot leaves, like those of a weeping willow, it is now used to contain electric light and is placed on the dinner table or the mantelpiece with very charming effect. Some of the glass trees now take on the characteristics of particular species, and to tins end introduce other substances than glass. A most lifelike-even though purely suggestive—representation of a cedar was made of crystal glass for the mam structure, with tubular coral beads tor the layers of the branches which are so characteristic of this tree.
