FIRE WASTE
CARELESSNESS CAUSE OF LARGE PERCENTAGE
“The Minister has said that 70 per cent, of the fires in this country tire caused by carelessness,” said Mr. F. G. Cray, a member of the Fire Board at the opening of the Brooklyn Fire Station yesterday morning. “I would go so far as to say that fully 80 per cent, of the fires are caused either through carelessness or criminal negligence, and I speak with the experience of forty years behind me. I congratulate the people of Brooklyn 00 the fine station (bey now'have. It will probably' serve the district adequately for the next twenty-five years, and when the place becomes another city no doubt .it will have to be enlarged, but remember, please, that (ires are mostly caused by your carelessness, and that prevention is better than cure. The responsibility rests upon the people of New Zealand. No doubt Brooklyn’s percentage will go down as the result of the establishment of the new station and the good men we are placing here.” (Applause.)
