Recently, during the course, of a Rugby match played under the jurisdiction of the Pelorus Sub-Union, a Maori player was ordered off for rough play. He lost no time in expressing his regrets to the Sub-Union, and his letter may be regarded as a model of self-abasement (says the “Express”), it is certainly a classic effort, the full text being as follows: — “The President; Pelorus Sub-Union. I am .overwhelmed with grief and remorse when I think of my ungentlemanly behaviour and. excessive, verbosity during'the match plaj-ed by the, and teams on Saturday Junp 16„ ultimo., and regret that, my hasty action should have marred an otherwise amicable game. I beg to express my contrition for my unseemly action in regard to my’opponent, Mr. , and can only suggest that such. action was' engendered by a misapprehension, and was due to an unwitting ebullition of spirit fostered by an assiduously contested game. In submitting this ;explanation to your Union, I trust that my expression of penitence, together with my assurance of unimpeachable future behaviour, will, in some small'measure, influence you to the extent of ameliorating jour decision, and that your Union will \xtend to me the Christian principles of iharity, for which it is universally ac:laimed.” The Union, it is recorded, deeded unanimously to extend the prin:iples for whiijh it is universally acclaim-
