CHATHAM CUP TIES. MARIST AND PETONE IN LOCAL FINAL Two of the four senior Association football games in Wellington on Saturday were Semi-finals in the local Chatham Cup Competition, when Petone defeated Y.M.C.A. soundly by 4—o, and Marist secured ) the honours against Hospital by the odd goal in three. Leslie scored all the goals for Petone. In the championship Diamonds could only draw against Seatoun, who secured their first point so far this season, while Thistle won (heir, game with Institute.

RESULTS AT A GLANCE CHATHAM CUP. Petone 4, Y.M.C.A. 0. Marist 2, Hospital 1. SENIOR A CHAMPIONSHIP. Thistle 6, Institute I.' Diamonds 2, Seatoun 2. SENIOR B. Waterside 6, Johnsonville 2. Hutt 0, Thistle 2. Swifts 1, South Wellington 3. PETONE BEAT Y.M-C.A. • LOSERS DEMORALISED. . Petone were in good form on the Basin Reserve against Y.M.C.A., and always held the upper'haud. Supporters of Y.M.C.A. were of the opinion that they had never seen their team perform so-poorly this season. Only McQirr and Ballard could kick, and but for the solid defence of McGirr the Petone score might well have been larger. 1 •

The teams were: — . , . Petonc.—McVeah, Steel and Haines; Farquhar, Campbell, and Stobbs; McKenzie, Cameron,; Leslie, Cleverly, and James. 1 ' - , Y.M.C.A.—Lucas; Trott and McGirr; Pearson, and Ballard; Worth, Dempster, Rigby, Lack, and Stocks. The referee was Mr. C. F. Ward. 1 Consistent, good play found Petone men getting the ball on most occasions, and they pressed their a vantage, with the result that Leslie, pouncing on the ball after a partial clearance, netted with a low shot. The Y.M.C.A. forwards utterly failed in combination, and their shooting an’ centring was inaccurate. Ballard and Armitage worked hard, but the Petone defence kept the Y.M.C.A. forwards at bay. Dempster was, foiled time and again, and Rigby hardly had a chance. Leslie then broke through the centre, and though McGirr followed in pursuit the ball was iu the. uet before he could reach him. It was all Petone’s game with good play in all departments, and the half-time score of 2—o marked their . .periority. ■ . The second spell saw Y.M.C.A. rally for a moment or two, but it was only a flash in the pan. They'"never shaped like a winning team. The Petone forwards worked like a machine, and only McGirr’s stubborn resistance held them off at all. Trott was not happy at rightback. Several shots Lucas saved well, but after a hot assault, in which there were lucky escapes, Leslie netted again. In the closing stages Y.M.C.A. did get to close quarters on three or four occasions, but neither Dempster nor Rigby could shoot. Petone attacked, a Y.M.C.A. player handled in the penalty, area, and Leslie put on the fourth goal. Petone played good, sound football, and their big win of 4—o. was well merited. There was a fairly good gate, well, divided between two games on the Basin Reserve. THISTLE BEAT INSTITUTE FOUR GOALS TO LOTHIAN. The previous week's' defeat of Marist by Institute evoked quite a little interest in the game between Institute and Thistle, which was played at Wakefield Park. The game was one of the poorest seen so far this season and Thistle had no difficulty in registering six goals against weak opposition. The teams were as follow; Thistle.—Fletcher; Jack, Hooper; Kirkland, Hanlon, Wheelan; .Houston, Campbell, Lothian, Cunningham, HoneyInstitute. —Rogers; Bell/ Gill; Byng, Brownlee, Rusterholz; Bilby, Maddocks, Dickinson, May, Smith. Referee: Mr.. H. W. Smith. Thistle assumed control from the start. Institute commenced a movement, but Maddocks receiving from Smith overran the ball. Thistle commenced operations in the centre, and made ground for Hanten to beat Rogers. Thistle 1, Institute 0. A well-sustained attack by Thistle resulted in Institute conceding a corner, and ne fewer than six shots went astray. Thistle came again, and this time Honeyman found the net. Thistle 2, Institute 0. Faulty kicking and selfishness' lost Institute two more good chances. Institute were making the mistake of skying the ball against the wind. Just before halftime Lothian scored Thistle’s third goal. Institute made the pace on resumption, and May missed narrowly with a free kick. Thistle retaliated, and neat passes from the right to Lothian saw that player thrice beat the goalie. Thistle G, Institute 0. A ragged attack initiated by Dickenson drew Fletcher from the goal, but he was beaten for the ball, which rolled into the net. The whistle sounded seconds later. Thistle 6, Institute 1. . 1 MARIST DEFEAT HOSPITAL A POOR DISPLAY. It was with some difficulty that Marist hewed a way to victory iu their Chatham Cup fixture with Hospital at the Basin Reserve. It was the first, visit of the Hospital Club to (own.this season, and after leading by one goal to .nil for nearly three-quarters of the way thev were defeated by 2 goals to j. Excellent weather and ground conditions prevailed, but the game was about the poorest yet played, on the Basin Reserve. Marist, with the exception ol the last 20 minutes or to, never gave the least evidence that they were likely to win. Soon after the commencement ot the second half Thomas, the Marist captain, made a rapid change in his team. Cudby and Scott changed places and Darning was brought to centre torward and Brennan sent to right half. This alteration was the saving of Marist and two goals brought victory m sight. The teams were as follow; — Hospital. —Trewick; Gibb. Thompson ; Simon, Jeffrey, Soutar; Fudge, *Miiishall, Anderson.' White, Lambert. . Marist —Hickey; Kelly. .Rudolph; Durning, Thomas, Burke, Barton, Mahoney, Brennan, • Scott, Cudby. Mr, Jackson was the referee, Trewick in the first minute mafic a fine save, following a beautifully centred ball by Barton. It was early evident that Marist were considerably weakened by the absence of Fitzgerald. McElligott, and Condon. Hospital had the full mea.sure of the Marist halves early, and play for some time was in Marist territory. The visiting forwards vdere, on the whole, too slow. Fudge sent in one fme shot, the ball travelling via Thompson, Anderson, and Marshall. Hickey saved the shot, but did not clear too well, and a strenuous fight for possession ensued, during which Anderson scored through a bunch of players. Hospital 1, Marist 0. Marist then attacked with more strength, but Trewick, the Hospital custodian, was in great form, and saved some excellent shots, chiefly from Barton, The remainder of the first half was dull. Half-time came with the score I—o in Hohpital’s favour. The second half opened with even less promise of better play. Hospital had a slight

advantage. Gibb and Thompson were more than equal to Mahoney, Brennan, and Scott. After the positional change already referred to, Marist drew level, following a well-scored goal by Burke from a corner. Towards the end, Cudby scored after a line piece Of play in combination with Burning. Hospital had had a good number of opportunities, but the Marist defence was too quick ' for their forwards. The game ended— Marist 2, Hospital 1. SEATOUN v. DIAMONDS A DRAWN GAME. The game between Seatoun qnd Diamonds wqs played at Seatoun, and after extra time was played ended with the score at two goals all. Kershaw and Harrop scored for Seatoun, and J. Smith and McLeod for Diamonds. LOWER GRADE RESULTS SECOND A. Waterside 3, Diamonds 4; Wadestown 0, Island Bay 2; Y.M.C.A. 2, Brooklyn 1. ' , SECOND B.
