Two churches which have stood since the earliest days in Canterbury’s history are to be demolished shortly (says the Christchurch “Press”). One is St. Peter’s, Riccarton, and the other, the Anglican Church at Woodend. Archbishop Julius preached the last sermon in the old church at Riccarton on Sunday morning. It was built seventy-one years ago, and only the western end remains. This is a very beautiful remnant, and age has endowed it with veneration anti historic traditions, but it must give way to a more modern structure. The church at Wcodend has been condemned, and will be rebuilt. The last official service in it was conducted by Archbishop Julius. Speaking at St. Peter's his Grace referred to the change which comes with the passage of time. Nature was full of the undiscovered gifts Of God to man. Such a grand achievement as the trans-Pacific flight was significant of a great change in the world to-day. So it was with churches, the old order changed. Many people loved the old church of St. Peter’s, with its beautiful surroundings, and he was one of them. It bad been, indeed, a great influence in the life of the people for good. But it could not escape from the law of change. It had to go, and he hoped as beautiful a building would be raised in its place to the glory of God.
