“UNBUSINESS-LIKE METHODS”
CITY COUNCIL CRITICISED “Is this helping us any, Mr O’Shea?” inquired Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court yesterday, addressing the City solicitor, who was defending a £9OOO compensation claim made against the City Council. Mr. O’Shea: It may not be, Sir, but I am trying to break down in crossexamination the marvellous opening of Mr. Myers, who said things about the Citv Council which were untrue. Mr. M. Myers, K.C. (who appeared for the plaintiff): I complained about the unbusiness-like methods of the City Council, that was all. Mr. O’Shea (scornfully) : Unbusinesslike methods. That is all Mr. Myers can say. In every case he has it is always “unbusiness-like methods and unbusiness-like methods” on the part of the City Council. Mr. Myers: It's perfectly true, that’s why I say it. The city solicitor (angrily): It is absolutely untrue. When Mr. Myers has nothing else to say, your Honour, he always harps about “unbusinesslike methods.” He wag just the same in the milk case, and it's all he can say to-day.
Mr. Myers only laughted and the cross-examination of the witness proceeded.
