TRAINING COLLEGE APPOINTMENT
STRONG ACTION BY EDUCATION BOARD
Strong dissatisfaction was expressed at a meeting of the Wellington Education Board yesterday at proposals made by the Department, which, it was stated, in effect proposed to centralise appointments and control of training colleges. The chairman (Mr T. Forsyth, M.P.), explained that the matter was of such importance in the public interest that the Board considered it a duty to disclose the proposed “legislation by Order-in-Council.”
The matter originated in the refusal of the Department to confirm the appointment of Mr S. K. Lomas, M.A., M.Sc., as principal of the Wellington Training College.
The Board alone, it was stated, could appoint but only with the approval of the Minister. The Board declined to vary its selection, and in order to end the deadlock the Department now proposed an amendment by Order-in-Council, which virtually conferred on the Minister the power of appointment, and not only so, but to make the action retrospective. A resolution was passed protesting against the. passing of such regulation.
A full report of the meeting appears on page 10.
