CANTERBBURY’S HEAVY RAINS
DAMAGES TO ROADS AND »• . ’ BRIDGES.
Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, June 19.
Damage to roads and bridges and the minor flooding of creeks and water-races as a result of the . recent rains is'reported from several country districts at Akaroa, where four and a half inches of rain fell during the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday. Freshes in the main creeks running through the town carried away several small bridges, while the flooding in Henning’s creek washed away some of the waterpipes. There was 18 inches of water on the croquet lawn and on portions of the recreation ground. Considerable damage was done to the Summit Road between Le Bbn’s Bay and Long Bay, which was blocked by a slip. Quite a number of slips occurred on the lower portion of Gough’s Bay Road. i A Christchurch motor company’s service car was blocked in Stony Creek, three miles this side of Kyikoura, ,yesterday morning. Apart from a few minor slips in the Hundalee district, past the Conway River, the roads up that way, ’though greasy, are quite passable. Until Stony Creek subsides cars cannot get directly through to Nelson, though the journey from that point to the creek is negotiable. Little other damage of a serious nature is reported.
