CHATHAM CUP-TIES DIAMONDS AGAIN DEFEATED BY Y.M.C.A, THISTLE AT PETONE The first local round of the Chatham Cup ties was played in Wellington on Saturday. Y.M.C.A. and Diamonds met at the Basin Reserve, where, after playing an extra half hour, Y.M.C.A. again defeated Diamonds by the odd goal in five, after missing a penalty. A lively game at Petone saw Petone emerge to enter the next round from Thistle, the score being 3—o. Thistle missed two penalties. Marist had an easy victory over Hutt by 3—l. In the Senior B Division Waterside maintained their unbeaten record by defeating Brooklyn 4—3, although Brooklyn were leading 3—2 quarter of an hour before the finish.

EXIT DIAMONDS ‘ Y.M.C.A.’S DELAYED VICTORY. Diamonds were given an early opportunity tb avenge their defeat of the previous week when they met Y.M.C.A. again at the Basin Reserve on Saturday, this time in the first round of the Chatham Cup. They failed, and Y.M.C.A. won by 3 goals to 2, the winning goal being scored by Lack during extra time which had to be played owing to a draw, 2-all, on time. The game was of the true cup-tie order, a hard, dour battle, with a bright individual effort relieving the dullness now and again. It can safely be said of the game that it had the most farcical ending of any yet played in Wellington. The last fifteen minutes of the extra time was played in almost total darkness, and all that spectators, and only those pressed close up to the picket fence, could see, were a number of players flittering about here and there as if they had lost something. And they had lost something, too—it was the ball—and if a player did happen to run against it a short kick was all that was needed to do the disappearing trick again. It was utter nonsense to have played the extra time, as it was impossible for the referee to have had control of the game during the last spell of extra time. Diamonds fielded their usual eleven, but made a nositional change in playing Smith at centre-forward and Anton at inside-left. Y.M.C.A. had Worth at outside right in place of Nicolle, and Dempster at centre, Rigby taking an inside berth. The teams were as follow: — . Y.M.C.A.—Lucas: Trott, McGirr; Pearson, Reyling, Ballard; Worth, Rigby. Dempster, Lack, Stocks. Diamonds. —Ewing; Wotherspoon, Guest; Findlay, T.. Wotherspoon, McCormack ; McLeod, Daniells, Smith, Anton, Stark. Mr. Ward was referee.

Diamonds were the first to attack, but Anton could not reach the ball before Stark’s cross-kick went into touch near the upright. A spirited run by Dempster found Ewing wanting, after failing to clear, and Dempster, regaining possession, netted. Y.M.C.A. 1, Diamonds 0. “Offside” pulled up Smith just as he had Lucas beat. Diamonds were well cornered for the first ■ fifteen minutes, and only the stubborn play of the two Diamond backs held Y.M.C.A. from increasing their lead. Any attacks by Diamonds were sent back; mainly by good work by McGirr. Twice McGirr and Trott left openings, eagerly seized by McLeod and Anton, who both sent in mighty shots, but Lucas-proved safe. Stark, despite his light weight, played brilliantly, and often had Worth and Pearson trailing behind him, with no hope of catching up. His centres were most all true, but McGirr and Trott kept close touch, and rarely gave the inside men a moment’s grace. Dempster and Lack availed themselves of the long shots upfield from McGirr, or the nice placings of Ballard, and kept Ewing busy. Y.M.C.A. in their turn were in some tight corners, arid before half-time Stark equalised from a penalty, kick. Y.M.C.A. 1, Diamonds 1. • Diamonds opened in the second half particularly well; Smith presented Anton with a good opening, but it came to nothing. Stocks, with a great centre, gave Dempster possession close, to Ewing, but he pitched the ball over the bar. A nice three-man movement, Findlay to Daniels to Smith, was a thriller, and all but met with success. Y.M.C.A. were better served in a like movement by Reyling, Worth, and Dempster, the latter beating Ewing. Y.M.C.A. 2, Diamonds 1. The Blacks’ standard was soon lifted high again, when Stark taking possession from Wotherspoon, beat Lucas with a rocket shot. Y.M.C.A. 2, Diamonds 2. As the scores remained unaltered when time was called by the rules of the competition, an extra half-hour was played, in the early part of which Lack scored what proved to be the winning goal, and exit Diamonds from the Chatham Cup competition for 1928.

. PETONE BEAT THISTLE - - ./ TWO PENALTIES MISSED. The game between Thistle and Petone on the Petone ground was fast and interesting. The teams were: — Thistle: Fletcher, Jack, Hopper, McLellan, Hanlon, Wheelan, Smith, Campbell, Lothian, Montgomery, Cunningham. Petone: McVean, Steel, Haines, Farquhar, Campbell, McKee, Stobbs, Hunter, Leslie, Dunlop, James. Petone attacked at once, and a penalty awarded for "hands” against Steele saw Lothian kick over the bar. Petone attacked again, and Leslie shot wide. A miss by McLellan saw Petone nearly through, out Hopper charged Hunter off the ball, and Stobbs shot behind. A fine passing rush by Petone gave Fletcher some exciting moments, but he cleared upfield in fine style. Thistle now took a hand in affgirs, and, attacking strongly, good work by Campbell . and McLellan almost saw them through. A foul by McLellan gave Petone a fine chance, which they could not avail themselves of. Retone again attacked, and from, an infringement in the goal area Leslie netted. Petone 1, Thistle 0. Half-time was called soon after. The second spell was very fast and even for a long time, both sides playing good football. A penalty against Steele saw McLellan kick the ball, into McVean’s arms. Petoue’s second goal ought not to have been allowed, as Stobbs drove the leather through loose netting at the side. Petoue 2, Thistle 0. This reverse had a bad effect on Thistle, Petone forwards running rings round the defence, and Leslie .scored from well out, giving Fletcher no chance. Petone 3, Thistle 0.

. MARIST BEAT HUTT MARCHMENT IN FORM. Marist and Hutt provided a lively display at Hutt Recreation Ground before a fair gathering. Rudolph and Durning were absent from the Marist side, and’as it was necessary to rearrange the side the usual combination was lacking. Marist attacked immediately, and Thomas had a shot, but the goalie saved. . A strong attack by Hutt failed through over-eagerness to find the line instead of feeding the inside men. Marist pressed, and Marchment succeeded in heading through. Marist 1, Hutt 0. Hutt frequently broke away, but Thomas and Fitzgerald proved the stumbling block. Smart play on the right saw: Coudoji s.qjtre to Marchment* who

again headed into the net. Marist 2, Hutt 1. Marchment found the net for the third time immediately after the kick out, but the goal was disallowed. Shortly afterwards Barton centred beautifully to Condon, who supplied the extra. The second half was mostly a repetition of the first, with Hutt showing an improvement. Butland in goal performed creditably in this spell, his clearances being well executed at all times. About half way through a melee near the goal-mouth resulted in Lowry scoring for Hutt. The game ended: Marist 3, Hutt 1.

WATERSIDE v. BROOKLYN BEST OF SEVEN. Waterside came as near to losing on Saturday as at any time during the season in the senior B grade, when Brooklyn, after having the best of the play for three-quarters of the game, went off in the closing stages, in which Waterside scored the two goals required to win. In the early stages Browning unluckily put thi ugh his own goal, but D. Brown soon equalised, and Minify gave Brooklyn the lead. The Watersiders were not so smart on the ball as usual, while Brooklyn were nippy and generally aggressive. Stanbridge evened up the score before the interval. In the second spell Hanson made no mistake with a penalty kick, giving Boe no chance, and held the lead for about half an hour. They then succumbed to the pace and heavy going, and speeding up the pace, Watersiders kept the Brooklyn defence busy. Dunsmore came to light with a first-timer, bringing the scores level, and before the end netted again from a cross by Wilson. Waterside 4, Brooklyn 3.

The teams were:— Waterside: Boe;'Bolton and Irwin; O’Donnell, Main and Arbuthnot; Garrod, Dunsmore, Stanbridge, Wilson and Cullen. Brooklyn: Deans; Browning and Hendry; Hanson, Winter and Sutton; McCardle, Minify, Brown, McPhail and Morris. Referee: Mr. E. Watts.

SWIFTS v. HOSPITAL The Hospital had a bye in the Chatham Cup tie, and Swifts had a bye in the seniors B championship owing to Hutt meeting Marist in the cup. Swifts went to Hospital and played a friendly game, Hospital winning <5 —-2. The Management Committee arranged the game so that the patients at the Hospital should not be disappointed in their Saturday afternoon fixture. Hospital have not yet made an appearance in town this season. OTHER RESULTS SENIOR B. Johnsonville' 4, South Wellington 3. THIRD A. Petone defaulted to South Wellington FOURTH A. Institute 1.
