COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ CHOIR
The Wellington Commercial Iravcllers and Warehousemen’s Association Main Voice Choir displays the possibilities ol part-song singing by amateurs wma directed and conducted in bUtli an exce 1 lent manner as by Mr. 11. 1. ''l l . ll ® Saturday evening in JJje,. lo "" n Hall Lol1 ’ cert. Chamber. That Wellington possesses such a choir is a matter lor congratulation: that the public is not attracted to it in numbers sulliclent to till the Town Hall, is a matter tor regret the choir is deserving of much greater patronthan apparently is at present accoiued to it. It possesses a, line balance ot voices and the conductor has the art ot ■■■etting the best out of them. lhe choir is indeed comprised of a band of musical enthusiasts. The tour de force on Saturday was perhaps “lhe Destruction of Gaza” (L. de Kllle). while the most popular number was the humorous partsong "Men” (Frank Odell). "Comrades in 'Arms” (Adolphe Adam). "Kevenes(A M. Storch). "Down tn Alabama (airatr’ed bv I’attl Edmond), amt "Lovely Night" (Chwatal). were all warmly applauded. The "Morning Serenade provided an opportunity lor c. Hiekmott (bass) and VV. J. Monnt.ioy (tenor) to be heard as soloists, anil their singing was amongst the good .things of the ereiiing. The choir also rendered Hie Lon ? 1 a.v Closes" (Sullivan), in memory ot the late Edward Freeman and George 11. Mlint. These concerts have always been noted for the discrimination with which the soloists are selected. On Saturday night Miss Ngaire. Coster (mezzo-soprano more than sustained the high standard set. Her voice was clear and sweet as she" sang "A Summer Night,” “Thank God for a Garden.” "Lorraine, Lorraine, 1 oree ” and "Somebody Whispered to Me” ’ Mr. Egerton Pegg (tenor), sang "Salve! Dimora,” from Gounod's "Faust,” and ns an encore "Good Night Beloved A great success was achieved by Mr. s. E Rodger (baritone), who. sang the "Slave. Song" (Teresa del Hiego), and was twice recalled. .Mr. W ,1. Kay, for hts cornet solo fantasias, "Pretty Jane, and "The Farewell," had to submit to insistent calls for further,, numbers.
