RACING AT HAWERA AND ASHBURTON

PUWHERO WINS ADAMSON STEEPLECHASE

DAVIDSON HANDICAP. TO PAITONU

THORNDALE WINS CHIEF HANDICAP IN THE SOUTH

The final day of the- Egmont meeting, and the one-day fixture at Ashburton, occupied the attention of sportsmen on Saturday. The favourite, Puwhero, won the Adamson Steeplechase at Egmont, and. an outsider in Paitonu the chief flat handicap. At Ashburton the principal handicap fell to Thorndale.

” EGMONT MEETING

PUWHERO’S STEEPLECHASE PAITONU WINS DAVIDSON HANDICAP Dominion Special Service, (By Telegraph—From ‘‘The Watcher.”) Hawera, May 12. The winter meeting o£ the Egmont Racing Club was concluded to-day in brilliant weather. The attendance was again large and the track in perfect order. Racing was verv keen throughout, several head finishes being recorded, and the favourites fared badly, only Puwhero and Mendip winning, while at least three big dividends were hoisted. Puwhero won the Adamson Steeplechase without much difficulty, and in the flat handicaps Partaga and Paitonu scored, both being ridden by J. Barry. C. Taggart, who was thrown off Comical in the Steeplechase, broke a collarbone. Speculation was brisk, the increase for the day being £3508 10s. The sum, of £21,100 10s. was handled, as against £17,502 on the corresponding day last year. The total for the meeting was £39,455 10s., as compared with £34,824 twelve months ago, an increase of £4631 10s. The progeny of the defunct sire. Bisogne, had a good innings, winning five races.. . NGAJIUTU HANDICAP. The opening event, the hack sprint, saw the'defeat of the hot favourite, Desert Lad, bv the rank outsider, Monsogne, who paid a great dividend. There was no fluke about the victory, for Reed had Desert Lad well placed all the way, and although he did his utmost in the finish Monsogne had the advantage and beat him by a head. The winner, who is a sister of Paitonu, was left off the card, and another feature was that he was ridden by the apprentice, Murray, who was taken off Desert Lad, whom he rode on Thursday. Orcades ran a fair race into third place. Miss Mercia was never prominent. MANAWAPOU HURDLES.

Another hot favourite went under when Vexatious was relegated to second place in the hurdles by Wenday. Vexatious ran a creditable race but had no chance with Wenday, who had gone out in front six furlongs from home. Troilus ran an

improved race and Whisogne and Glengariff were only fair, while Airtight and Rahepoto disappointed. The latter was a good second favourite. The form was somewhat different from the first day with no Mister Gamp to carry them along. ADAMSON STEEPLECHASE. A short price was accepted about Puwhero in the Open Steeplechase, and he duly pulled his backers through. For a round it was an interesting race, as Puwhero, San Fera, Son o’ Mine, and Comical were running in fairly close order, but Comical lost his rider about six furlongs from home, and Son o’ Mine dropped back, leaving the issue to Puwhero and San Fera. They raced together until the last fence, where San Fera made a bad landing, Puwhero beating him home by three lengths. Son o’ Mine was ten lengths away, and Gilgai fourth, with . I’assin’ Through and Haeremai well back. Radiate fell at the fence, where Comical lost his rider. Puwhero was always going like a winner and San Fera’s mistake at the last fence made no difference. Comical ran a fair race until he went-out, but he was not very good at one or two fences, and was tiring when put out of the contest. He may yet make good, although his style of jumping is very clumsy and he risks his fences. He has yet to complete a steeplechase course. MOKOIA HANDICAP. Although Broad Acre drew the outer in the open sprint, he was a firm favourite in a great betting race, and after having every chance he failed to do better than third. Ned Kelly and Lorna Doone made the running to the turn from Broad Acre, who was followed by Sllvermine and Partaga, with Bonogne and Melissa in the rear. Once in turn Broad Acre took the lead from Lorna Doone, but Partaga challenged, and then Melissa camo with a strong run from the rear, Partaga just beating her home by a short head. Broad Acre was two lengths back, with Silvermine fourth and Bonogne was next. Melissa was unlucky. Had she corile sooner she must have won. SHORTS HANDICAP. Segment, who had finished fourth in the first race, sprang a surprise when he beat the well-backed Le Champ in the hack sprint. Le Champ had every chance, running in behind Argue and Taugerin to the turn, and leading at the distance. Here Segment, who had been lying handy, came with a run, and beat Le Champ by a head, with Tangerin half a length back. Argue was fourth, and then the two favourites, Roval Lover and Eka, who were both well beaten. Eka hung out badly round the turn. DAVIDSON HANDICAP.

Backers suffered another reverse when the little fancied Paitonu took the prin-

cipal handicap from the favourite, Benzora in the last half dozen strides. Benzora’ got stopped on the turn, and this cost him the race. As on the first day. Day Guard made the pace, but he never got far away, and Hipo and Biimp were always handy to him. .lust as Benzora, who was next, made his run on the rails on. the turn, he got a. bad set-bac.v, biL he was again up at the distance, and was in front a hundred yards off the post. Here Paitonu came with a strong run, and beat him home by a head. Blimp, who ran an improved race, was a length and a half away, with Dayguard fourth. Dav-uard ran another good race, but his rider forced him too hard to get to the front Orazone, Ilipo, Kawhakina, and Flying Juliet were all well up. Benzora was a’ good thing beaten. BOROUGH HANDICAP.

The last race was a good thing for the favourite, Mendip, who was always in and left his field in the straight, to win by four lengths from Keddar, who ran a fine race all the way, and just headed off Bisox for second. Bisox was consistent, but not good enough. Ga»nanner was fancied, but never showed up. Sovena ran an improved race into fourth place. ,

ASHBURTON MEETING

THORNDALE WINS AUTUMN HANDICAP. FAREWELL HANDICAP TO GAY SONNET Dominion Special Service. Ashburton, May 12. The Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting was held to-day in fine weather and there was a large attendance. The course was in excellent condition. The totalisator handled £10,335, against £10,884 for eight races last year. LONGBEACH HANDICAP. The opening event, the Longbeach Hack Handicap, provided an exciting contest, and half the field was bunched. As the post was reached Star Stranger II carried a few more tickets than invested on Exide and Sea Gay, but none of the trio gained a place. Star Stranger II led Despot and Skyquest into the straight, but inside the distance the first-named was done with, and Despot was left in charge. Nearing the post half a dozen of the candidates appeared to have a chance and in a close finish Crossbow, who was never far from the leaders throughout, finished on strongly and gained the verdict by a neck from Philanderer,- with Despot, who tired in the remaining few strides, a similar distance away, in third place. Zeuxis finished better than anything else in the race on the extreme outside, and in another few strides would have caught the judge’s eye. Star Stranger 11, Thurso and Skyquest were next. AUTUMN HANDICAP. Battle Colours and Assurance were withdrawn from the Autumn Handicap, which provided a good betting pool amounting to over £ISOO. Fresco finished up a better favourite than Thorndale, while the remainder were evenly supported. After the field had covered two furlongs Carnot took charge and led past the far turn from Killoch, Fresco and Tintoretto, with Thorndale and Moratorium in the rear. Carnot, Fresco and Tintoretto engaged in a tussle as soon as the home run was commenced, and the issue appeared to rest with this trio, but Thorndale, with a characteristic finishing effort, soon gathered in the leaders and won in an attractive style by three parts of a length from Tintoretto, who finished better than the tiring Carnot and beat him by a length. Moratorium was a nexik away next, followed by Fresco and Killoch. TRIAL PLATE. Slummery was the only' defection from those paraded for the Trial Plate. Bon Raid was weighed out, but lost his rider in the preliminary and bolted twice round, being eventually withdrawn from the race The bracketed pair, Waihemo and Star Stranger 11, were better supported than The Bailiff and Gay Crest, but the dividend payers came from the lightly supported division. A scramble took place after the rise of the barrier and several of the candidates soon had their chances jeopardised. Red Jazz and Waihemo were the first to show out and led past the far turn from The Viscount, Despot, and The Bailiff. Red Jazz was first to turn for home from Waihemo, The Viscount, and Despot, and in the run to the post Red Jazz maintained his advantage, to win by half a length from Despot, who was a similar distance in front of Waihemo. The Viscount was close up fourth, with Amourette and The Bailiff together next. The remainder were well spread out. Star Stranger II fell after the field had traversed two furlongs and his rider, A. E. Ellis, was removed to the hospital for treatment. i EIFFELTON HACK HANDICAP. The pubjic were correct in their judgment in summing up the candidates for the Eiffelton Hack Handicap, the first and second favourites. Malmsey and Lancer, returning the dividends. Amor took charge at the end of two furlongs and led around 'the far turn from No Response. Malmsey and Oriflamb. The field closed up approaching the home bend, and as the straight was entered No Response had a slight advantage from Amor, with Malmsey and Honeycomb closely followng. When straightened up for the post,

No Response retired, and Malmsey assumed command, and, without being seriously troubled,. won comfortably by a clear length from Lancer, who came from the back in the straight, and put in some good work over the concluding stages. Amor cried content a hundred yards from the post, and was two lengths away third, followed by Money Mine, Honeycomb. Orjtlamb, Fair Exchange, and No Response. FAREWELL HANDICAP. Gay Sonnet Was made the most pronounced favourite of the day in the Farewell Handicap, and she landed the stake, but only after a close finish with one of the outsiders, Gold Mint. Sagittarius was the early leader, and piloted the field to the home turn, where Gay "Sonnet made a forward move. The latter was .in front at the turn for home, followed closely by a. bunch consisting of Sprinkle, Finora. and. Polydcctcs. The favourite was proclaimed, the winner inside the distance, but she had to be ridden right out to ho d oft Gold. Mint, gaining the verdict by the narrowest of margins. Zaragoza was a length and a half away third, and then came Sprinkle. Sagittarius, Chickwheat, ami Bronstell. Gold Mint gave, trouble at the barrier, and was one of the last threo to got away, otherwise he would have reversed places with - the favourite.
