GOOD COMPETITION PRICES UNCHANGED (Australian Press Association.) Loudon, May 10. At to-day’s sales wool sold consisted of 7100 bales, of which 4389 were Australian, 1951 New Zealand. There was a miscellaneous selection in all classes, principally of second-hand wool, and there was good general competition, but prices were Unchanged. New Zealand realisations were as follow:—Ocland, highest price, 26Jd„ average 23Jd.; Totargi, 22d. and 2<)fd.: Whare, 20(1. and 174 d. Bradford tops are dull and spinners are very quiet. Quotations: Sixty-fours quality, 53Jd.; sixty’s, 51d.; fifty-six’s, 42(1.; fifty’s, 32d.; forty-six’s, 27d.; forty's, 25Jd.

PRODUCE MARKETS CANTERBURY Bf Telegraph.-Press association Christcliurcli, May 11. The position recorded in regard to oats lias not altered to much extent. On Wednesday, however, there, was a further advance, and business was done at -is. nd. f.0.b., 5.1., t'or A. gartons, .as high ' as 3s. 7d. being paid on trucks. This, however, about represents in the meantime the peak of values, which may be described as steady. There has been an ■ exceptional amount of speculation during the week. Most of the holders have taken their profit in a fairly substaptjon one, and got'' out. Values on trucks at Canterbury stations are 3s. Gil. to 3s. 7d. for A. gartons, 235. 2d. for B.'s. The foregoing values are in advance of export parity. Latest offers from England notifying a firm market, with no change in values to date. About 24,000 sacks have been shipped Home, with more to go by the next few boats. Singularly enough, the value of Algerians has shown no reflection of the garton position. There has been some business between . merchants at 3s. 9d. to 3s. lOd. for good quality, but offers to farmers range about 2s. lOd. to 2s. lid. The chaff market is unaltered.

Wheat is being offered more freely. Sales up to 6s. 2d., f.0.b., s.l„ for Tuscan were made early in the week, but tills is not available to-day. Business at ss, 9d. on trucks was transacted, and at the moment ss. Sd. may bo quoted. Fowl wheat is slightly weaker, and spread MayNovember has been quoted at ss. 10J., f.0.b., sacks extra.

Potatoes are little changed, though the atmosphere in the North Island Is improved. To date this season shipments North exceed those for the corresponding, period last season by over 20 per cent. “Prompt" f.0.b., s.i., prices are .£4 15s. to £4 17s. Oil., Junes £5, and July's £0 2s. (Id. At the equivalent or truck price of tliese figures, farmers are slow sellers. Onions are still weak, and all classes of small seeds are unchanged in value.

HIDE AND SHEEPSKIN SALE WELLINGTON PRICES. The fortnightly* sale of hides, sheepskins, and tallow was held yesterday, there being a good attendance o. buyers. Brokers report, that bidding was very keen for all lines, with the exception of salted skins—these, showed a tendency to drag, .and prices were slightly easier than- at last sale. At the morning call yesterday a sale of New Zealand Refrigerating (10s. paid) at Bs. 4d. was made on ’Change, aud a sale of Wellington Woollen (ordinary) at £0 4s. was reported. There were no transactions recorded at the afternoon call. There was again a good demand for Government stocks and bonds. The 4J per cents, were firm at £97 12s. 6d., the 5J per cents, at £99, the 5J per cent, bonds (1933) at £lOO 12s. -6d., and 1936 at £lOO JOs. Wellington City 5J per cents. (1933) were in demand at £99 55., Wanganui City, 53 per cents. (1945) at par, and Ashburton Power Board 5J per cents. (1933) at £99. After tile eall the secretary received the report of a sale of 44 per eent. stoek at £l)7 15s. Bank shares were firm. A sale of Bank of New Zealand was reported after the call at 60s. Bank of Australasia were wanted at £l4 2s. 6d.. and the Rights at 60s. Commercial Bank were stcadv, the ordinary at 28s. Bd., and the preference at £7. English. Financial shares were quieter, but prices were unchanged. Goidsbrough, Mort were wanted at 50s. 3d., N.Z. Guarantee Corporation, ordinary, at Bs. 4d., Wellington Investment at 10s. 3d., and Wellington Deposit at 9s. New Zealand Insurance were firm at 41s. 3d., and South British Insurance at 595. Od. Gas shares were quiet, but there was a demand for Wellington Gas, the ordinary at 275. 9d., and preference at 16s. 6d. Meat shares were also quiet. Buyers raised their offer for Wellington Meat Export by 3d. to 10s. 3d. Union Steam were wanted at 20s. 4d., and Hud-dart-Parker (preference) at 20s. 9d.

Wellington Woollen were firm, the ordinary at £6 2s. Gd. and the preference at £6 Gs. Westport Stockton were steady and unchanged, the ordinary at 2s. 10d. and the preference at 3s. 3d. There were buyers of Staples and Co. at 865., British Tobacco at 40s. 9d., Burns, Philp, and Co. at 428. 3d., Colonial Sugar at £5B, Electrolytic Zinc ordinary at 30s. 6d. and preference at 325. 3d. MUTUAL LIFE AND CITIZENS’ ASSURANCE CO.

Tlie report of the Mutual Lite and zens’ Assurance Company Ltd. for 192 T, shows that there lias been no break in the society’s continued progress. The new business written during the year in ths ordinary branch consisted of 11,341 policies tor £3,559,597 (of which £59,030 wag reassured), an increas of £342,639 on the previous year. The premium income for the year totalled £1,088.859, the first premiums amounting to £110,019. The claims paid during the year under policies totalled £1,425,187, and since its inception the company has paid £18,408,279 to policy holders. The expense rate was 11.9 per cent, on the premium income, but calculated on the total income the rate was 7.1 per eent. The assurance funds increased during the year by £648,489. and the total as shown in the balanee : sheet stands at £10.330,552. The assets amounted to £18,567,527, and of this £15.829,504 ig invested in Government and municipal securities and loans to public bodies, £1.230,523 in loans on policies, and £813,775 in loans on mortgage. The rate of interest earned on the funds was 53 per cent. The number of life assurance policies in forca at the end of the year was 509,324. assuring (with bonuses) the sum of £48,774,s 789. The premium income in the indues trial branch totalled £573,890. The ex* pense rate wa» 33.5 per cent, on the premium Income, and 25.7 per cent, on tba total income.
