BOERS ' SETTLEMENT

IN SOUTH-WEST AFRICA

(“Times” Cables.)

Cape Town, May 10.

The South-West African Assembly, which is equally divided between German sympathisers and pro-Unionists, decided on the casting vote of the chairman to pass a vote of £50,000 for settlement of Angola Boers in the South-West. The Union provides the money, but the Auditor-General insisted on the adoption by the Assembly of the vote, which was discussed for seven hours. The Administrator stressed his efforts to respect German sentiment. If they rejected the vote, it might be interpreted as race prejudice.

The Governor-General now orders the vote to pass. The Boers in question trekked : fter the war to the number of a thousand. They are dissatisfied with Portuguese conditions, chiefly because the Portuguese do not recognise Afrikaan as the medium of education in Northern Rhodesia.
