HEMP AND TOW
DECREASE IN GRADING. The returns furnished by the Chief Hemp Grader detailing the quantities of hemp, tow, stripper tow, etc., graded at the ports of the Dominion during April show an all-round decrease of -144 bales compared with the corresponding month ot last year. ) The gradings of hemp were as follow (those for April, 1927 being given. in parentheses) :—Fine, nil (13) • good fair, 447 (5961: high fair. 2406 (2..20); low tair. 1474 (3519); common. C? 7 (804): rejected 161 (211) : condemned. 2.r ( —); total, 6000 (7663); decrease. 1613 bales. The gradings of tow were: hirst gram, 157 (240); second grade, 938 (1289); third grade, 541 (467); condemned, 05 (.3), total, 1691 (2075); deeTease, 384 bales. The April gradings of stripper slips were: Second grade, 60 (.149) ; passed for export. 104 (172); condemned. 14 (4); total, 17S (325) ; decrease, 117 bales.
