U.S. PRESIDENCY

RETIREMENT OF SENAfOR WALSH

AS DEMOCRATS CLEARLY -- DESIRE SMITH

(United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.)

(Australian Press Association.)

Washington, May 4.

Senator Walsh, of Montana, announced that he was “impelled by the logic of events to request that no further effort be made in Montana or elsewhere to promote my nomination.” In a letter to Mr. McDowell, of Montana, the Democratic leader also stated that the California primary result “quite clearly indicated that the Democrats desire Governor Smith as their candidate.” In view of Senator Walsh’s retirement the Montana delegation to the Democratic Convention will probably be instructed for Smith.

ATTACK ON SMITH

(Australian Press Association.)

(Rec. May 5, 5.5 p.m.)

Washington, May 4.

Heflin, renewing his characteristic attack on Smith, said: “He is not nominated yet. The people are determined they are not going to have Tammany. It is not religion with me, but I object to being told by the Pope that I must practise his religion. If Smith is nominated I will take a boat for Europe.”

ANTI-SALOON LEAGUE

VOTES

(Australian Press Association.)

(Rec. May 6, 11 p.m.)

Washington, May 5.

Out of the murk of political corruption charges, alleged Ku Klux Klan control, and accusations of undue influence by the State, the Anti-Saloon League voters of Indiana at Tuesday’s primary will give their decision between Hoover and Watson, after one of the hottest campaigns in years. It will then be seen whether the Ohio results have an influence upon Hoover’s aspirations, since it is freely predicted that Indiana would be a second hurdle which the latter must negotiate before seeing his way clear to Presidential nomination.

NEGRO ORGANISATIONS’ TICKET

(Australian Press Association.)

(Rec. May 6, 5.5 p.m.)

Washington, May 5. Representatives of various negro organisations have started a movement to enter an independent combination, white and negro ticket, for President and Vice-President at the approaching elections. They held a mass meeting and endorsed “General” Jacob Coxey, one-time leader of tlie army of unemployed, for President, and Dr. Simon Drew, a negro minister, for Vice-Pre-sident. They also issued a call for a national convention here on June 4. CONDUCT OF “DRY” MEMBERS Washington, May 4. The “Washington Daily News” has announced that it proposes henceforth “to publish its news the appearance on duty of any so-called ‘dry’ member of the House or Senate in an obviously intoxicated condition.” The newspaper declared that the decision was made “to put an end to such hypocrisy.’” It added: “A spectacle of a senator or representative under the influence of liquor undertaking publicly to discuss affairs of State is always disgusting, but when such senator or representative is one who consistently votes for prohibition, such hypocrisy and rank abuse of special privilege make the spectacle intolerable.”
