FIRE IN CUBA STREET

CHINESE LAUNDRY DAMAGED. ■ As a result of clothes being hung to close to a drying stove, a Chinese laundry, 240 Cuba Street, owned by Yee Lee, was severely damaged by fire and water shortly afer six o’clock last night. The . contents also suffered heavily. The building, owned by Messrs. Markam and Levy, has one floor and contains two rooms besides the front shop. There was no 'insurance on the contents. The building next door, No. 242, consisting of brick with an iron roof, also suffered from heat, smoke and water. It is owned by Mr. Owen Hurvey and used as a grocer’s establishment. The stock was not insured.

By .Telegraph.—1 j ress association. Dunedin, April 20. At 8.30 this evening, a fire broke out in a building at the corner of Tewsley aud Willis' Street, owned by Messrs. John Mill and Company, and occupied by Messrs. A. S. Paterson and Company as a store for wool and skins and electrical machinery. The building was divided into three sections, the largest of which contained electrical machinery, valued at approximately £25,000. Some £lOOO worth of hides and skins were stored in an adjoining section, but the smallest of the three, which was used as a hide floor, was empty. The fire had a strong hold before the brigade arrived, and although it was got under within half an hour of the alarm being given, the greater part of the building was completely gutted, only the hide floor escaping. The contents of the wool and hide and electrical stores, which suffered considerable damage bv fire and water, were fully insured in the British Traders Office.
