FIRE ON MAHIA
• ♦ OUTBREAK IN BUNKER HATCH Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, April 17. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's liner Mahia arrived at Lyttelton from Port Chalmers with her bunker hatch amidships on fire, the outbreak being probably due to spontaneous combustion. Gangs of men have been busily engaged since her arrival getting out the coal, which is being temporarily re-stowed between decks in order to get at the seat of the fire. At present smoke is issuing from the ventilators. The iron plates of the hatch are verv hot, and it is thought that the fire had been going on for several days before the vessel reached Lyttelton. Men will be probably working'overtime torNght till the seat of the fire is reached. BLAZE IN SCHOOLROOM.
