WAR MEMORIAL

STATEMENT BY MR. HURST SEAGER The following letter has been addressed to the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup) by Air. Hurst Stager:— "I saw by the report of the meeting of your council on the Basin Reserve, published in Tuesday’s paper, that you said that ‘I had not stated the position correctly in that the depth was some 22 feet, and it had been found that the total depth over all is 44 feet, and that would mean an encroachment into the Basin Reserve, and on to the actual playing area.’ The original design on which mv report was based is most admirably fitted for the Kent Terrace site, and can be erected without any encroachment upon the playing area of the reserve. I am not responsible in any way for the statement of ‘22 feet,’ nor am I responsible in any way for the measurement of the design which was submitted to you. You,, of course, were not aware that the design submitted was not the original design which had been approved by the Memorial Committee and by the'public generally, but a fresh one which the architects had prepared, and which I only saw for a few moments yesterday, for the first time. I have not had time, therefore, to study this new design, but hope to have the opportunity of commenting upon it at a later date.”
